Have you found the Major? Not yet

Journalist Michael Yon posted a report this morning - http://www.michaelyon-online.com/bullshit-bob.htm - it makes for interesting reading - and I seem to have been confused as the unnamed major.

Since May last year I have been pretty busy working within Media Ops. I have served in Kosovo with 2 RIFLES and Iraq within MND(SE) and I am now a week away from a tour in Afghanistan, somewhere I have not been since 2006.

I am currently in the UK and am not the unnamed major Michael Yon refers to. With any luck I will have the chance to meet and work with Michael when he returns to Helmand.

Kind regards
Major Paul Smyth

  1. Well done for getting that clarification in early, something tells me that this is going to escalate beyond the control of the MoD and go viral. Remember to be first with the truth, good or bad.

  3. Paul,
Good luck and again another well done for getting your pitch in first.....Michael Yon has a big (and getting bigger) following who regard him as honest and forthright...something that's been lacking to date.
    Keep safe.

Good to hear media ops embracing journalists like Yon, some statements from MOD have looked more than a little contrived in the past and so we trust Yon not any part of MOD machine.
There are good things happening and also some issues so stay honest and let us know both.

  5. Had a mate who returned recently from Afghainstan in not such a great state and could do without Yon's ego and gossip column right now. Appreciate that you were absolved of the accusations here and rightly so. But it was the Yon gossip column that allowed for that and is frankly a useless thing to be running at this point in time. It is not journos, egos and gossip re MediaOps we need. It is strategy.

  6. There are always two sides to a story:

Commander Bastion introduced a standing order over the summer that banned running between 1100-1500 (the hottest part of the day) to prevent those with self-inflicted heat injuries taking up beds in the hospital needed by those with battlefield injuries.
