Hundreds welcome troops home to Braunton - North Devon Gazette

THE men and women of 24 Commando Engineer Regiment paraded through Braunton today (Wednesday) to cheering crowds as hundreds turned out to welcome them home.

CROWDS cheered and the Union Flag flew as hundreds of people gathered in Braunton today (Wednesday) to welcome home the men and women of 24 Commando Engineer Regiment from RMB Chivenor.

Freshly returned from serving in Afghanistan's notorious Helmand Province, the 300 engineers were treated to a heroes' reception of applause, flag waving and cheers.

A huge crowd of families, friends and well wishers gathered at Caen car park to watch a medal ceremony before the regiment paraded through streets lined with people to St Brannocks Parish Church and service conducted by the Vicar of Braunton, Reverend Anne Thorne.

Before the medals were handed out, both North Devon MP Nick Harvey and Councillor Jasmine Chesters, chairman of Braunton Parish Council, addressed the troops to welcome them home and praise their service.
