Afghans are electing a president in the country's second polls since the fall of the taliban. These pictures illustrate what is happening in Afghanistan toady.

President Hamid Karzai, who is running for a second term in office, urged Afghans to turn out in large numbers.

In the capital, Kabul, some men were already waiting when polls opened at 0700.

Seventeen million Afghans are registered to vote in the elections, which observers hope could help build stability in the country.
